Words of Wellness: Health Benefits of Black Tea

As cooler temperatures set in, it’s natural to want to cozy up with hot cup of something. Pumpkin coffees and sweet apple ciders are festively flavored, but they also contain high amounts of sugar and fat that can wreak havoc on your skin, teeth, and waistline. A 20-ounce pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks contains a whopping 470 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 62 grams of sugar - up to 1/4 of your recommended daily intake! Instead, reach for a cup of tea to help you warm up, wake up, and amp up your health this fall.

Given all of the health benefits of tea, it’s no surprise that it’s the second highest consumed beverage in the world after water, though different countries and regions enjoy different types of tea.  The Spa at Paradise Point recently partnered with local company Tea Gallerie, which gathers exotic blends from China, Japan, Nepal, Tibet, Indonesia, and South Africa.  Their newest collection showcases the health benefits of black teas from these destinations while still delivering fall's favorite flavors.

Studies have shown that the health benefits of black tea include:

  • Antioxidants prevent cancer
  • Boosts immunity
  • Protects lungs from cigarette smoke damage
  • Reduces risk of stroke
  • Combats bacteria linked with tooth decay and gum disease
  • Lowers cholesterol and regulates blood pressure
  • Prevents plaque build-up in the arties

The most common types of black tea include earl grey, English breakfast, and chai, but Tea Gallerie has hand-blended some unique combinations for fall like coconut cacao, apple caramel almond and, of course, pumpkin spice. No matter which tea you pick, get the most health benefits from your black tea by skipping the milk or creamer, along with iced or decaf versions. All of these diminish the health benefits of black tea.

Now go grab a cup, and drink up!
